Dry Needling

What is Dry Needling?

Dry needling is a treatment that utilizes sterile, hair-thin, monofilament needles to manipulate muscle tissue for the purpose of trigger point relief and/or muscle activation. Effectiveness is further enhanced through electrical dry needling, the addition of a controlled electrical stimulation to the needles, which enhances a neurovascular response for additional healing and pain relief.

For what conditions is dry needling effective in providing symptom reduction?

  • Muscle spasms/trigger points/recurrent strains

  • Muscle weakness, especially neurologic weakness (stroke/brain lesions)

  • Low back pain

  • Sciatica

  • Jaw pain/TMJD

  • Osteoarthritis

  • Headaches

  • Tennis elbow

  • Plantar fasciitis

  • Tendinopathies

  • Carpal tunnel syndrome and other neuropathies

What is the procedure like?

The placement of the needles usually takes about 5-10 minutes. The number of needles depends on each person’s treatment area and needs; there may be as few as two or as many as eight needles placed in a given treatment area. The needles are then left in place and attached to an electrical stimulation unit which creates light rhythmic contractions, lasting for 10-20 minutes. Once the needles are removed, other treatments like focused soft tissue massage or joint mobilizations may be applied depending on your needs.

Are there any risks?
